Activities:  

All activities of the Foundation are conducted by the Board of Directors and volunteers dedicated to keeping the spirit New Orleans’ musical heritage alive.  Past and present activities include:

  • Direct cash grants to musicians whose applications demonstrated they met the assistance criteria set by the Board of Directors.  
  • Instrument replacements purchased in cooperation with local suppliers.  
  • Sponsor/underwrite band fees for events such as the ReNew Orleans Secondline, French Quarter Festival and Twelfth Night Carnival Kickoff.
  • Backbeat Jazzfest Evening Concert Series – An annual event presented in conjunction with WWOZ over Jazz Fest time.  In 2006 and 2007, 15 evenings of music have been presented featuring over 35 New Orleans acts with select performances broadcast and streamed worldwide via the internet.
  • Rhythmic Roots: Community Music Project an interactive music heritage presentation combining the diverse cultural elements of New Orleans’ percussion, Brass Bands and Mardi Gras Indians into a community celebration.
  • Mardi Gras Fun(k)stravaganza presented in conjunction with WWOZ to provide the sounds of Mardi Gras in New Orleans to the world over the airwaves and internet streaming.

    All activities that have occurred and that are contemplated for the future are in furtherance of the tax-exempt purpose of the Foundation.  Activities will continue to be designed to raise funds, raise awareness, showcase and promote and support the needs of New Orleans music and musicians.
