The Backbeat Foundation announces the 2008 Backbeat Jazz Fest Series.  This year the Backbeat Foundation has expanded its evening series to showcase the most dynamic talent in New Orleans along side exciting national acts. For 2008, the Backbeat Foundation spreads across the city presenting more than 20 acts at 3 venues:  Blue Nile (BN); Tipitina's French Quarter (TFQ); and Republic NOLA (RN).   The 3RD Annual Backbeat Jazz Fest Series kicks off Saturday, April 26th and keeps the groove going through Sunday, May 4th.

Wednesday,  April 30: Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey and The Quartet featuring Adam Deitch, Nick Daniels, Ian Neville and Big Sam (BN).

Thursday, May 1: "The Royal Family Ball" featuring Soulive and Lettuce (RN); Johnny Sketch & the Dirty Notes (BN); Theresa Andersson (BN); Big Sam's Funky Nation and Bonerama (TFQ).

Friday, May 2: Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews & Orleans Ave; The Dynamites and Big Sam's Funky Nation (BN); Lettuce (TFQ).

Saturday, May 3: Dirty Dozen Brass Band (TFQ); Toubab Krewe; U-Melt and DJ Logic (BN).

Sunday, May 4: Hyena Records Showcase featuring Marco Benevento Trio with Mike Dillon's Go Go Jungle, John Ellis' Doublewide, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey and surprise special guests.

 


FREE MUSIC FRIDAYS - MANDEVILLE TRAILHEAD

Free Music Fridays at the Mandeville Trailhead

Starting April 11th and continuing for 8 consecutive Friday evenings, the Trailhead Foundation and the Backbeat Foundation will present “Free Music Fridays” at the Mandeville Trailhead.  This music series is geared towards bringing a quality family cultural experience to the Northshore.

With the onset of springtime weather Free Music Fridays will offer an enjoyable and affordable way to spend a Friday evening.  The musical line-up includes: Five Finger Discount, Four Unplugged, Pine Leaf Boys Trio, Nathan & the Zydeco Cha Chas, Maggie Brown, Johnny Sketch & the Dirty Notes, AsheSon Cuban Band, The Iguanas, 30 x 90 Blues Band, The Stringbeans, Amanda Shaw & the Cute Guys, Paula and the Pontiacs, Christian Serpas and Ghost Town, Paul Sanchez & the Rolling Road Show, Robert Fortune Band, and Big Sam's Funky Nation.

The venue gates will open at 5:30pm with the opening musical act starting at 6:00pm and the headliner starting at 7:00pm.  Please feel free to bring Lawn chairs, blankets, cameras, and children are all welcome. Sorry- no outside food or drink allowed. Concessions sales keep it free.  See you at the Mandeville Trailhead!

Bring Your Own Percussion: Drums, claves, tambourines, whatever helps you find your groove!

Please join us for another season of the Rhythmic Roots: Community Music Project. The series will be held in the Sophie Wright Park in the Lower Magazine Street District a/k/a LOMA from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. for three Sundays in the Spring.

This year's Rhythmic Roots will combine with the Green-Ability Fair to present an interactive, cultural and educational event that invites all attendees to join together in the struggle to support and preserve the environment and the culture of New Orleans. The event is formulated to provide the residents of New Orleans with resources and information on practical and cutting edge environmental practices in the context of a social and cultural celebration.

On March 30, 2008, Rhythmic Roots & Green-Ability Fair will feature performances by Kirk Joseph's Backyard Groove, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Shannon Powell and other special guest percussionists, who will meld their sounds into a presentation that is uniquely New Orleans in the intimate community setting of the Sophie Wright Park in the Lower Magazine Street District.  Everyone is invited to join in this interactive, musical and cultural collaboration by bringing their own percussion to play along.  Additional highlights will include environmental displays, demonstrations, interactive exhibits and educational booths by Community Partners: Green Light New Orleans; Hike for KaTREEna; The Green Project; New Orleans Food Cooperative; and Defend New Orleans/Gulf Restoration Network.

The 2007 Backbeat Jazz Fest Series Event Recap:

The Backbeat Foundation is proud to announce the resounding success of the 2007 Backbeat Jazz Fest Series @ Café Brasil.  Through the generosity of our sponsors, the Foundation’s 2nd annual event was on-target as the focus was kept local.  Over the course of five evenings, the Backbeat Foundation presented a variety of music reflecting the unique culture and soul of New Orleans’ musical traditions. 

On Thursday, May 3rd, WWOZ 90.7 FM broadcast and streamed via the internet the live rootsy sounds of Papa Mali accompanied by luminary New Orleans musicians Theresa Andersson, Big Sammie Williams, and Cyril and Gaynielle Neville.  Throughout the series, attendees reveled in a number of other notable collaborations including Art Neville with brother Cyril, Topaz with Big Sam, Eddie Roberts of the New Mastersounds with Papa Mali, Dickie Landry with CC Adcock, and Big Sam with Dan Dyer.  Other highlights of the Series included a performance painting of Big Sam’s Funky Nation by local artist Lionel Milton.

The Backbeat Foundation is now looking toward the future and the furtherance of our mission to foster support of the rich New Orleans cultural heritage by providing assistance to local musicians through both music programming and resource support.

The Backbeat Jazz Fest Series will not only celebrate New Orleans music but also provide a glimpse of the visual arts scene with works on display by Lionel Milton, an artist with New Orleans roots, style, and flair.  Lionel will showcase his vibrant paintings and prints evoking the personality of the streets of New Orleans (http://elleone.com/).
